Cushion underfoot.
Padding goes between the sub-base and the turf to add shock absorption, comfort underfoot, and — for playground products — certified fall-height protection.
The P-250 foam pad is a general-purpose shock layer sold as 12′-wide roll goods; the 10-mil playground impact pad and playground pad (24.5 SF each) are built for fall-height safety under play equipment.

For certified fall-height protection under play equipment, use the playground impact pad or the playground pad (24.5 SF each). The P-250 is a general-purpose shock pad for comfort rather than rated fall height.
The playground pad covers 24.5 square feet each; the P-250 comes as 12′-wide roll goods and the 10-mil impact pad is sold in rolls. Your trade rep can calculate quantities from your area and required fall height.
Not usually — padding is for playgrounds, rooftops, pet areas, and anywhere you want extra cushion. Standard lawns are installed directly on the compacted base.
