Case Study 05 · Residential Playground

Under the swing set:
engineered, not just installed.

At a Collinsville residence, a heavily used swing-set area had worn down to bare dirt and mud. The answer wasn't a rectangle of turf — it was a complete playground surface system, shaped to the yard.

The Starting Point

Solve the problem,
then install the product.

Every successful outdoor project begins by solving a problem — not by unrolling a product.

Here, the problem was familiar to any family with a swing set: concentrated foot traffic and the repetitive impact of swings had worn the natural grass to bare, uneven soil that turned to mud with every rain. The goal was a safe, durable, attractive play space that could take years of daily use — and end the mud and maintenance for good.

One complication: the swing set was already installed and staying put. The new surface had to be built around fixed playground equipment, integrating cleanly around every structural post while keeping a natural look across the yard.

The Design

Flowing curves,
not a rectangle.

Instead of dropping a rectangle of turf under the equipment, a custom organic layout was designed for the playground's actual footprint — flowing curves that complement the surrounding landscape while maximizing usable play space.

A flexible bender board perimeter defines the shape, gives the edges a clean transition, and permanently contains the turf system. Below the surface, the area was prepared and leveled for a stable foundation with proper drainage across the entire play area — the part of the job nobody sees and everybody benefits from.

The Safety Layer

Two inches of protection
under every landing.

Because this surface supports active children's play, approximately two inches of impact-absorbing padding went in beneath the turf — custom cut around the playground structure so the protection is continuous, with no gaps at the posts.

What the Padding Layer Adds
  • Improved comfort underfoot
  • Enhanced impact absorption beneath the swings
  • Increased overall safety for everyday use
The Turf

BDXT, anchored
around every post.

The surface itself is SGS BDXT — selected for its realistic Texas-lawn appearance, durable construction, and natural multi-tone thatch. It's a turf built for exactly this kind of punishment.

The Result

From worn and muddy
to year-round play.

What was a high-maintenance trouble spot is now a clean, safe, all-season play space that looks like part of the landscape.

01 / Safety

A softer landing, by design.

Two inches of continuous impact padding under durable turf — a genuinely safer play environment beneath the swings.

02 / Mud

Eliminated. Full stop.

Proper site prep and drainage mean the mud under the swing set is gone — along with the bare patches and the boot prints on the kitchen floor.

03 / Appearance

A natural look that holds up.

BDXT's multi-tone thatch reads like a real Texas lawn, and the curved bender-board perimeter makes the play area feel designed, not dropped in.

04 / Durability

Built for high-traffic family use.

Anchored, seamed, and finished to perform for years under continuous daily play — with next to no upkeep.
