Under the swing set:
engineered, not just installed.
At a Collinsville residence, a heavily used swing-set area had worn down to bare dirt and mud. The answer wasn't a rectangle of turf — it was a complete playground surface system, shaped to the yard.
Solve the problem,
then install the product.
Every successful outdoor project begins by solving a problem — not by unrolling a product.
Here, the problem was familiar to any family with a swing set: concentrated foot traffic and the repetitive impact of swings had worn the natural grass to bare, uneven soil that turned to mud with every rain. The goal was a safe, durable, attractive play space that could take years of daily use — and end the mud and maintenance for good.
One complication: the swing set was already installed and staying put. The new surface had to be built around fixed playground equipment, integrating cleanly around every structural post while keeping a natural look across the yard.
Flowing curves,
not a rectangle.
Instead of dropping a rectangle of turf under the equipment, a custom organic layout was designed for the playground's actual footprint — flowing curves that complement the surrounding landscape while maximizing usable play space.
A flexible bender board perimeter defines the shape, gives the edges a clean transition, and permanently contains the turf system. Below the surface, the area was prepared and leveled for a stable foundation with proper drainage across the entire play area — the part of the job nobody sees and everybody benefits from.
Two inches of protection
under every landing.
Because this surface supports active children's play, approximately two inches of impact-absorbing padding went in beneath the turf — custom cut around the playground structure so the protection is continuous, with no gaps at the posts.
- Improved comfort underfoot
- Enhanced impact absorption beneath the swings
- Increased overall safety for everyday use
